Ibuprofen (Fever & Pain Relief)

Overview

Fever management is critical while traveling — untreated high fever can be a sign of serious illness requiring prompt evaluation. Prescription-strength Ibuprofen (600–800 mg) provides more consistent dosing than OTC versions and is useful for altitude headaches, dental pain, muscle strain, and febrile illness.

The CDC recommends travelers carry antipyretics in their travel health kit, and Ibuprofen is one of the most commonly recommended options. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it particularly effective for altitude headaches, musculoskeletal injuries, and general pain management during travel.

Important: do not use Ibuprofen if dengue fever is suspected — acetaminophen is preferred, as NSAIDs can worsen dengue-related bleeding. The FDA-approved labeling notes Ibuprofen should be used with caution in individuals with peptic ulcer disease, chronic kidney disease, or those taking blood thinners.
